In the second section of this Product Design tutorial the Temperature Controller was created using Extrude Profile to produce a cylindrical feature. This third section uses an Edit function to create a circular pattern and Extrude Profile to subtract material from the cylindrical feature.

The snapshot opposite shows the target design for the extrude profile, this section of the Product Design Tutorial.

  Step 1
Open the file: loft & Extrude Process

Create a workplane and sketch on the top face of the cylindrical feature and change the title to finger grip.

  Step 2
Change the viewpoint to Onto Workplane. Pick the Select Lines icon from the Design Toolbar and pick the circle that was used to create the cylindrical feature. RC and select Project from the sub menu. RC again and select Toggle Construction.

  Step 3
Pick the Circle icon from the Design toolbar and move the cursor to the 12 o'clock position on the construction circle. The cursor will snap to an intersect point to allow you to draw a circle at this point.

  Step 4
Pick Sketch Dimension from the Design Toolbar and add a dimension to the circle. Pick Select Constraints from the Design Toolbar double left click (DLC) on the dimension and change the value to a diameter of 10mm.

  Step 5
Pick the Select Lines icon from the Design Toolbar and pick the 10mm diameter circle. From the pull down menu select: Edit and Duplicate. Select the Circular tab and set the Number to 8 and the Total Angle to 360.

  Step 6
The Duplicate command creates radial copies of the original circle. The next sequence will use this geometry to extrude into the cylindrical feature and subtract material to create the finger holes.

  Step 7
Change the viewpoint to Trimetric. From the pull down menu select: Feature and Extrude Profile. Turn on the Subtract material button and set the Distance to 5mm Below workplane. Click on OK to complete the command.

  Step 8
The snapshot shows the result of the Extrude Subtraction. The procedure is similar to sculpting a design in the traditional method of model making.

  Step 9
Zoom in to capture the detail shown in the snapshot. Pick the Select Edge icon from the Design Toolbar and select the inner semi-circular edge of the recess (shown as red in the snapshot).

  Step 10
The snapshot shows the result of the Round Edge command. The cylindrical shape has been modified to a spherical shape to accept the profile of a finger.

  Step 11
Zoom in further around the single finger hole. Pick the Select Edge icon from the Design Toolbar and select the edge shown in the snapshot (hold down the shift key while you pick each facet of the edge). RC and select Round Edge from the sub menu. Set the Radius to 1mm.

  Step 12
The snapshot shows the result of the two Round Edge features. Repeat the procedure for the remaining seven recesses. You will need to rotate the model and zoom in and out to capture the required detail.

  Step 13
The final model in this section should look like the snaphot. The Steam Iron design is developing by creating successive features to the solid model.
