In the third section of this Product Design tutorial the Temperature Controller finger detail was created using Extrude Profile to subtract material from the solid model. This fourth section uses a sketch path and a cross section to create the handle feature.

The snapshot opposite shows the target design for this section of the Product Design Tutorial, Sweep Profile along Sketch Path.

  Step 1
Open the file: loft & Extrude & Finger Detail Move the cursor over the frontal workplane in the Browser and RC. Select New Sketch from the sub menu. Change the title of the sketch to handle path. This procedure has created a second sketch on the same workplane as the side view sketch.

  Step 2
RC and select Reposition Axis from the sub menu. Move the cursor to the base of the 4th vertical line from the left of the solid model and LC to reposition the axis as shown in the snapshot.

  Step 3
RC and select Reposition Axis from the sub menu. Move the cursor to the base of the 4th vertical line from the left of the solid model and LC to reposition the axis as shown in the snapshot.

  Step 4
Open the file: Handle Path Activate the handle path sketch and select all the lines. From the pull down menu select: Edit and Copy. Return to the original file. From the pull down menu select: Edit and Paste.

  Step 5
Activate the iron base sketch, move the cursor over the workplane title and RC to access submenu. Select New Sketch and change title to handle profile. This has created a new sketch on the same work plane as the iron base sketch. You'll use the sketch to draw a profile of the handle.

  Step 6
Change the viewpoint to Onto Workplane.

  Step 7

  Step 8
Select the Ellipse icon from the Design Toolbar and draw an ellipse with its centre at the mid point of the construction line. This position is also the origin of the loft path.

  Step 9
Zoom in to capture the detail shown in the snapshot. Set the major axis of the ellipse to a radius of 12mm and the minor to a radius of 8mm.

  Step 10
From the pull down menu select: Feature and Sweep Profile Along Sketch Path. Set the sketch to use as profile to handle profile. Set the sketch to use as path to handle path. Select Add material and OK to complete the command.

  Step 11
The snapshot shows the result of the modelling sequence. The ellipse has followed the centre line and generated a solid model of the Steam Iron Handle.

  Step 12
Pick the Select Edge icon from the Design Toolbar and select the two edges shown in the snapshot. RC and select Round Edges from the sub menu. Set the Radius to 3mm and select OK to complete the command.

The snapshot shows the result of the swept profile and round edge commands.

  Step 14
Use the Save Copy As option and save the current model as Loft & Extrude & Finger Detail & Handle. Close the current file.

In the following section we will use the Extrude Symmetrically option to create the sculpted feature on the body.
