In the fourth section of this Product Design Tutorial we used a sketch path and a cross section to create the handle feature. In this section we will use Pro/DESKTOP as a sculptural tool to remove material from the solid model.

The snapshot opposite shows the target design for this section of the Product Design Tutorial,Extrude Profile Symmetrically to Subtract Material.

  Step 1
Open the file: Loft & Extrude & Finger Detail & Handle Move the cursor over the frontal workplane in the Browser and RC. Select New Sketch from the sub menu. Change the title of the sketch to sculpt sketch. This procedure has created a third sketch on the same workplane as the side view sketch.

  Step 2
Open the file: Sculpt tool Select all the lines. From the pull down menu select: Edit and Copy. Return to the original file. From the pull down menu select: Edit and Paste.

  Step 3
The location of the green 0,0 axis determines the position of any geometry that is copied from one file to another. In the Sculpt tool file the 0,0 axis is deliberately placed in an identical position to the 0,0 axis in the steam iron file.

  Step 4
From the pull down menu select: Feature and Extrude Profile. Turn on the Subtract material button and set the Distance to 85mm Symetric about workplane. Click on OK to complete the command.

  Step 5
The snapshot shows the result of the sculpting procedure.

  Step 6
Use the Save Copy As option and save the current model as Loft & Extrude & Finger Detail & Handle & Sculpt. Close the current file. In the following section we will use the Select Edge and Project as a Line option to create the base of the steam iron body.
