In the fifth section of this Product Design Tutorial we used a profile as a sculptural tool to remove material from the steam iron body. In this section we will select an edge of the solid model and project it as a line to create the base feature.

The snapshot opposite shows the target design for this section of the Product Design Tutorial,Select Edge and Project as a Line.

  Step 1
From the pull down menu select: Feature and Round Edge, set the Radius to 3mm and click on OK to complete the command.

  Step 2
The snapshot shows the result of the Round Edge command. In the following sequence you will select the edge of the iron and project it onto a sketch. Pro/DESKTOP will transform the edge into a line to enable you to extrude the base feature.

  Step 3
Activate the Initial sketch on the base workplane.

From the pull down menu select: Workplane and New Workplane and select the Offset option. Set the Offset value to -10mm. Click on OK to complete the command.

  Step 4
RC (right click)and select New Sketch from the sub menu.

Change the title of the sketch to Offset base plate.

  Step 5
From the pull down menu select: Select View and View transparent to enable you to see through the solid model and access the hidden edge.

  Step 6
Pick the Select Edge icom from the Design Toolbar and select one of the edges (shown in red in the snapshot). RC and select Add tangent edges from the sub menu. This procedure will connect all the edges together.

  Step 7
RC again and select Project from the sub menu.

  Step 8
The snapshot shows the edge of the iron projected onto the offset workplane as a line. Note the square symbols on the line to indicate it is a Projected line.

  Step 9
From the pull down menu select: Feature and Extrude Profile. Turn on the Add material option and set the Distance to 10mm Above workplane. Click on OK to complete the command.

  Step 10
Rotate the model around and set the radius of the front edge to 3mm. The snapshot shown below shows the final design. Use the Save Copy As option and save the current model as Steam Iron final design.

  Redefining option
The last section show the result of using Pro/DESKTOP to redefine elements of the design proposal. The redefine option is a powerful creative tool and allows the designer to alter aspects of the solid model to make it more functionally efficient and aesthetically pleasing.

  Skills transfer
Volume One of this CAD/CAM library (Camera Exercise) comprised of an introduction 'how to' section that explained the redefine function of Pro/DESKTOP. Please refer to that document and transfer the skills to this current exercise.
