Corrosion
by Alexander Jones
Introduction
Corrosion affects us all and one of the most common forms of corrosion is rusting. Rust is
seen throughout the world and is a major engineering problem, damaging any structure that
contains iron, leading to weakness and possibly eventual collapse. Millions of pounds are
spent each year to combat this problem and a 1998 US report indicated that $276 billion,
3.1% of the GDP of the USA, was spent on corrosion prevention and repair.
